Why you can trust it

How we research & check our guides

Your dog’s health is no place to guess. Here’s exactly how these guides are written, checked, and kept up to date, so you can decide for yourself whether to trust them.

Who writes Barking

Barking is written by Ed Clarke, a lifelong UK dog owner, not a vet. That’s the honest starting point, and it’s why every health claim here is backed by a named veterinary source rather than personal opinion.

How we research

Every health claim is sourced to named UK and international veterinary authorities, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), the PDSA, Blue Cross, the MSD Veterinary Manual, and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Where a guide makes a medical point, we cite where it comes from so you can read the original yourself.

How we check natural remedies

Home remedies, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, oatmeal, the various oils, are checked against veterinary sources for safety and the correct dilution or amount before we suggest them. Where the evidence is thin or a remedy is popular but risky, we say so plainly instead of playing along.

When we tell you to see a vet

Every guide marks the point where home care stops and a vet visit starts. For anything urgent , a swallowed toxin, breathing trouble, a wound that won’t stop, sudden collapse, contact your own vet or Animal PoisonLine (01202 509000) straight away. A blog is never a substitute for examining your actual dog.

Our use of AI

We use AI tools to help with research and first drafts, but every guide is edited and fact-checked by a human against the named sources above before it is published. AI never publishes here unsupervised, and we don’t churn out pages for the sake of it, each guide has to earn its place by genuinely helping an owner.

Keeping guides current

Each guide shows the date it was published and, where we’ve revised it, the date it was last updated. We review our most-read guides regularly so the advice stays accurate.

Corrections

Spotted something wrong or out of date? Tell us at hello@barking.blog and we’ll put it right.

Barking is an information resource for UK dog owners. Our guides are carefully researched and sourced to named veterinary authorities, but they don’t replace your own vet. If your dog is unwell or you’re worried, contact your vet or Animal PoisonLine (01202 509000).
